Five days, five ways....a London shoot for Hair magazine.

Five days, five ways....a London shoot for Hair magazine.

I was asked to hot-foot it to London to work on a photographic story on how to create five different looks for five days of the week. This can sometimes be a tall order, because it’s all about creating looks that you can easily do yourself.

I spent the week before talking to friends family and clients, and after those discussions, I kind of got the gist of what people want to do, and can do, themselves – with a little help from their stylist of course.

Each shoot we do takes hours of prep, and I was lucky enough to have with me Hannah Evans, Cream’s Training Academy Manager, a team of professional photographers and of course, our beautiful model Francesca.

Look 1

To kick off, I went for a bit of glamour. The hair was freshly washed and blow-dried with plenty of body and then sections wrapped around a large tong then brushed out thoroughly to give a deep set wave.

Look 2

Using the wave from Look 1, I took a deep side parting and very sleekly pulled all the hair back into a low side pony and teased out the hair to make one big classy curl.

Look 3

It was time for a shampoo again, so as before, a nice big-body blow-dry and then tightly-wrapped sections around a small barrelled tong. You end up with a noodle perm look, but tease out each curl and you’re left with a mass of beautiful big hair curls.

Look 4

As I like to get as much use out of each prepped hair look as I can, so I used the curls from Look 3 and pulled out the curl even more to give the model a deep side parting. Then I French braided the front on each side, back to behind the ear, and pulled out the braid for a lovely bohemian look.

Look 5

This one was the easiest to create, using a water spray and lots of salt spray to damp down the hair down and give a just off the beach look. It’s effortlessly cool.

Dean’s top-tips for salon style at home.

The biggest tip I can give when doing your own hair is to spend the time prepping your hair with great products, a good blow-dry and setting the foundations – i.e. curling, waving, straightening, braiding etc. It will make achieving the final look so much easier and it will leave your style looking way more polished. And of course you will be able to use your prep for a second, if not third, look in the following days.

I might have had a big team with me on the day, but these looks are really achievable if you want to recreate them at home. They’re right on-trend this summer, so why not give them a go?
