All hail the bob

It’s probably one of the most iconic and recognisable hair styles of all time. The 15th Century martyr, saint and military leader Joan of Arc sported an early version, along with that wilfully independent, asp-loving Egyptian minx Cleopatra.

But the bob sashayed into the public consciousness in 1915 when Broadway ballroom dancer Irene Castle – a fashion-forward New Yorker – chopped off her long locks. Back then, her daring new hairstyle, adopted by the Flappers of the 1920s, was known as the Castle Bob.

Since those early days, it’s enjoyed famous wearers in every decade.

Coco Chanel. Mary Quant – wearing Sassoon’s famous 5-point bob. Blondie. Madonna. Rihanna. And the latest fan, Jennifer Lawrence.
If it’s good enough for the celeb elite, it’s good enough for us here at Cream. It’s why it’s without doubt my favourite style to work on.

There are are so many variants of the classic: sharp; layered; graduated; textured; short; with a fringe; without a fringe; inverted; the long lob – or any of them combined. So Just remember, before you say “a bob doesn’t suit me”, there really is a bob out there for everyone.
