Greige...

I wrote about this emerging trend last year but grey hair shows no sign of of slowing down as the surprise must-have cult hair colour of 2016… but it’s taken a new fresh direction as the colour of the season is called Greige… A softer blend of grey and beige with a hint of pink… It’s lighter and fresher than the concrete grey requested last year. Greige is a hybrid mix of deep grey, fused with a beige base and just the right amount of added oyster pink!!

Over the last few months we have been in-undated with requests in the salon for steely shades and certain celebrities Rihanna, Perrier Edwards and Kylie Jenner have all experimented with grey locks in the last few months. The hashtag #Greige has taken social media by storm and from soft furnishings, interiors, catwalk collections and of course hair colour have all had the #Greige title.

It started early last year on the catwalks of Jean Paul Gaultier and its filtered through to celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Nicole Richie. So with it becoming more mainstream, many clients are opting for cooler, greyish tones and whether it’s icy grey ombrè or for platinum full head blondes grey is definitely here to stay. It’s important to get the shade just right and this Greige chic trend won’t work on all skin complexions as it can leave some looking washed out. However if it’s done correctly, you can nail the look of the year!!!

With grey being a hard colour to achieve an in-depth consultation is key. A plan of action can be worked out with client and stylist and depending on existing colour build up and strength of the hair the right shade of grey can be advised and applied. The hair must then be bleached evenly to an almost very light pale white then a toner is applied giving the hair the Greige, pinky tone needed. The toner is the important finishing touch and opting for a myriad of tones from deep steely graphite, cloud grey, lavender, oyster or even pale ash blue there is a grey tone to suit everyone…

So embrace the colour trend of the year and let’s all go #GREIGE..
